  1. Deirdre Sartorelli

“The Business Case For AI” by Kavita Ganesan, Ph.D. is a thoughtful and accessible blueprint for executives to consider as they build out their AI strategy. From an overview of what AI is, to dispelling myths and then developing criteria to help managers select projects for AI, this book helps get the conversations going in today’s enterprises. AI is not a panacea and Dr. Ganesan is quick to point out that sometimes all a business needs is a better software solution. However, for those businesses who are able to capture high-quality data and then leverage it for a better client experience, they will emerge the winners in the long run.Consider the book essential if you are an executive who needs to interface with data scientists, whether they are in-house or being contracted to help implement an AI strategy.

Kavita Ganesan has done a masterful job of writing a fascinating guide to AI in business. I personally feel that everyone in leadership positions in businesses big, medium, or small should read this. It is laid out in a logical order. She tells you what to expect and what you will learn. And you will learn a LOT including what not to do. And the book isn’t filled with jargon; I so appreciate that I can follow along easily. I say “masterful” because she is a pioneer in the fields of AI and data science research. Yet she is able to write for the rest of us, too.

  5. Stan Robinson, Jr.

This book did an outstanding job of explaining the important considerations involved in evaluating when AI makes sense. Then it provided a logical progression of the steps needed to make an AI project work. It was written in terms that a non-technical person can understand.

Excellent book aimed at providing an understanding and starting point for business use of AI. Well written, easy to read, well explained. The author is obviously very experienced and knowledgable on this subject for application in the real world.

  7. Kelly Peterson

This book does what I wish more did: It immediately begins in a conversational tone to encourage a moment to pause and think about the current hype that we may ingest on topics around AI. Far too many writings explain AI and machine learning as a “magic bullet” which can solve any problem — all with a small or nonexistent budget. Dr. Ganeson dispels these myths with a balance of experience from industry to academia. For example, Chapter 2 concretely defines the difference between general and narrow intelligence in a way that is useful for anyone considering developing advanced capability in their enterprise. If I could wave a magic wand, immediately all executives in the world would see that a pamphlet based on Chapter 4 (Myths) would appear in their pocket so that more time could be spent on problem definition and what is truly possible rather than chasing miracles which are destined to fail.Throughout this book are excellent figures which illustrate the concepts being covered. Written in direct and concise language, most arguments are direct and applicable such as the warnings about the pitfaill of “AI for AI’s sake”. Finally, besides proper definitions and realistic expectations, the latter portions of this book provide an actionable framework for discovering and then implementing AI solutions. After all, if I could paraphrase Dr. Ganeson, too many organizations dive head first into developing solutions without forethought and planning about the goals, metrics and promise. Such efforts are likely destined to fail without adequate planning while the latter portions of this book provide a framework to prevent such failures.

I sailed through this book, which for me alternated between two related but distinct guides; on the one hand being a beautifully prescriptive book that I can use to guide Exec level teams through the years of AI disruption that we’re entering, and on the other simply as a fascinating insight into the mindsets we’re all going to have to develop as we approach this defining tech revolution of our generation.Highly recommend. Very easy to read writing style, humble points of view, non preachy but very insightful and genuinely, practically useful.

  9. Gabriel Salvatti

An excellent path for the leader who wants to get updated on the subject.
The book offers a comprehensive view of AI for Business without delving too deeply into the more technical part of the subject. It provides leaders with the necessary knowledge to take their first steps in the field of AI, clarifying when its adoption should or should not be considered and how to best utilize it. For those who can’t understand how recent advancements in AI solutions can impact their businesses and where the opportunities are, this material is an excellent starting point.

    My best read of 2023
The Business Case for AI: A Leader’s Guide to AI Strategies, Best Practices & Real-World Applications is undoubtedly my best read of 2023, and remarkably, it’s a book that can be digested in just a few days. This is largely due to the author, Kavita Ganesan, PhD, who knows precisely what she aims to deliver and does so in a refreshingly straightforward manner. The book is thoughtfully segmented into five parts: Frame Your AI Thinking, Get AI Ideas Flowing, Prepare for AI, Find AI Opportunities, and Bring Your AI Vision to Life. The book kicks off with a bold and provocative statement: “Stop using AI. That’s right – I have told several teams to stop and rethink.” This isn’t just a book that mindlessly champions the use of AI; it’s a critical and thoughtful guide to understanding when, how, and why AI should be incorporated into business strategies. It’s an invaluable resource for Technology leaders like myself who need to understand AI trends and assess their applicability and potential impact on our operations. The book doesn’t just dive into technical jargon from the get-go; instead, it starts with the basics and gradually builds up to more complex concepts, making it accessible and informative. The comprehensive cost-benefit analysis provided is particularly useful, offering readers a clear framework for deciding when it’s appropriate to integrate AI into their business strategies. However, it’s important to note that the fast-paced nature of AI development means some examples might feel slightly outdated, a testament to the field’s rapid evolution. Despite this, the book’s strengths far outweigh its limitations. This book is an essential read for anyone looking to genuinely understand the strategic implications and applications of AI in business. It’s not just another book on the shelf; it’s a guide, an eye-opener, and a source of valuable insights all rolled into one. If you’re considering AI solutions for your work or wish to learn about the potential of this transformative technology,Get ready to discover:What’s true, what’s hype, and what’s realistic to expect from AI and machine learning systems.Ideas for applying AI in your business to increase revenues, optimize decision-making, and eliminate business process inefficiencies. How to spot lucrative AI opportunities in your organization and capitalize on them in creative ways.Three Pillars of AI success, a systematic framework for testing and evaluating the value of AI initiatives.A blueprint for AI success without statistics, data science, or technical jargon.I would say this book is essential for anyone looking to understand not just the hype around AI but the real strategic implications and applications for businesses. It’s an eye-opener, a guide, and a thought-provoker all in one, making it a valuable addition to any leader’s bookshelf.
